ecobee Switch+

On Monday, March 26, 2018, ecobee, Inc. made available its new ecobee Switch+ smart light switch. The switch includes built-in far-field voice technology microphones, a speaker, and integration with the Alexa Voice Service. In addition, it contains built-in motion, daylight, and temperature sensors. It can also be operated using its built-in connectivity with ecobee iOS and Android apps. Lastly, the ecobee Switch+ includes a physical button for those whose tastes run to nostalgia. As a bonus, the ecobee Switch+ includes a user-controlled night light.

Devices That Can Be Operated by the ecobee Switch+

The ecobee Switch+ is designed to operate any CFL, fluorescent, LED (up to 150 watts for CFL/LED), and incandescent (up to 600 watts) light controlled by one switch with a neutral wire. The ecobee Switch+ is not designed for lights controlled by more than one switch. It also can not be used with motor loads such as ceiling fans. The ecobee Switch+ Operates at 120 volts 60Hz AC and is not compatible with 220v, 347v, or 480v systems. While the ecobee Switch+ is not a dimming light switch, It can be used in conjunction with dimming smart light bulbs, such as the Philips Hue bulbs. For more information about compatibility, check out the ecobee Switch+ compatibility page.

The ecobee Switch+ also has a built-in temperature sensor which, when used in conjunction with an ecobee Smart Thermostat will keep your room at the desired temperature.

Controlling the ecobee Switch+

Featuring just about every conceivable human interface, the ecobee Switch+ can be controlled by touch, voice, occupancy, daylight, mobile app, and computer. Some of these interfaces are in development and will be added as an automatic free update by Summer, 2018.

First, the ecobee Switch features a button. Pushing the button toggles a connected light on or off – Similar to light switches we’ve grown up with.

Next, the ecobee Switch+ contains built-in motion and daylight sensors. The motion sensor can detect whether anyone’s in the room and turn lights on or off accordingly. Daylight sensors detect the amount of ambient light in the room which means lights can be controlled using the amount of daylight in the room. Together, they work to ensure your lights turn on when you need them (like when you walk into a dark room) and off when you don’t want them on (for example, 10 minutes after the last person leaves the room).

The ecobee Switch+ also has a built-in temperature sensor which, when used in conjunction with an ecobee Smart Thermostat will keep your room at the desired temperature.

Full functionality of the motion, daylight, and temperature sensors will be available once a free, automatic update is installed in the switch sometime by Summer, 2018.

ecobee iOS app

Third, you can control the ecobee Switch+ using an iOS or Android app. You can also use the app the adjust the Alexa volume, you can program the nightlight, and group multiple switches together to create scenes. Additionally, the app contains complete instructions for physically installing the switch.

Fourth, you can use the built-in far-field technology microphones and Alexa Voice Service to control the switch. This includes using the integrated Alexa for just about everything any other Alexa can do. For example, “Alexa, turn on the lights,” or “Alexa, what’s the weather,” or “Alexa, play Classic Rock,” and other Alexa commands. In addition to the microphones, the ecobee Switch+ includes a built-in speaker. If the built-in sound quality isn’t to your liking and you have a Sonos speaker with Alexa, just tell your switch to play your music on your Sonos speaker.

Lastly, you can computer-control the ecobee Switch+. This includes built-in connectivity with Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, Samsung SmartThings, and IFTTT. There are already a long list of IFTTT recipes for controlling the switch. These include using geofencing to turn lights on and off; turning one room on or off when another goes on or off; sunrise / sunset light timing, security recipes and many more. For a list of IFTTT recipes for the switch, check out the ecobee IFTTT recipe page.
